The Platinum Jubilee | 2022

The Crown Jewels are missing! Detectives follow the clues to take us on a journey through the 70 years of the Queen’s reign.

I Can Sing! celebrated the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with a show created to reflect important events that helped define her reign each decade since 1952. The 7 core scenes included celebrations such as the 2012 Olympics, winning the World Cup in 1966 as well as delving into the realm of protest with the Miners Strike and Women’s Equal Pay Act; issues that really engaged the older group. Coming out of COVID-19 lockdowns, Climate Change and the NHS were both in everyone’s minds and so environmental disaster and the 50thanniversary of the NHS were important features. The Finale, Hope, was a new commission composed by our Saturday Programme coach, Vahan Salorian, which offered all the I Can Sing! students, who contributed to both the lyrics and music, an opportunity for reflection on the past decade.

Our detective story allowed us to travel through time to explore the past and reflect on the future, mirroring our focus for I Can Sing! on Ensemble and the camaraderie of going forward Together. Bringing back alumni I Can Sing! students in our new Rooftop Academy allowed us to both have a band for the first time and enjoy a ‘royal’ joke with their repertoire of Queen. We also wanted to pay tribute to our parents by creating a Parents’ Choir and so a section of the new commission Hope was written just for them!

I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed the performance on Sunday. It was really very moving, not to mention politically astute! I also highly enjoyed singing that beautiful song with the parents choir.
