The Platinum Jubilee (2022)

To celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, we wanted to create a show that would appeal to everyone and struck upon the idea of reflecting upon important events that have helped define our history each decade since 1952. Some were easy choices like celebrating the 2012 Olympics or winning the World Cup in 1966. Others took us into the realm of protest like the Miners Strike or Women’s Equal Pay Act, issues that the older groups really engaged with. Coming out of COVID-19 lockdowns, Climate Change and the NHS were both in everyone’s minds and so we wanted to help promote their importance. The Finale Hope, was a new commission composed by our Saturday Programme coach Vahan Salorian, which offered all the I Can Sing! students, who contributed to the lyrics and music, an opportunity for reflection on the past decade.

Our detective story allowed us to travel through time to explore the past and reflect on the future, mirroring our focus for I Can Sing! on Ensemble and the camaraderie of going forward Together. Bringing back alumni I Can Sing! students in our new Rooftop Academy allowed us to both have a band for the first time and enjoy a ‘royal’ joke with their repertoire of Queen. We also wanted to pay tribute to our parents by creating a Parents’ Choir and writing a section of our new song just for them!
