THE MUSIC BOX

for children and parents ages 1 to 4
explore and develop music making

Colorful illustration of a kangaroo playing a guitar and holding a tambourine, with the text 'The Music Box' in bold letters.

The Music Box enables young children to explore basic rhythms and melodies, experience different instruments, develop their listening and communication skills, and helps parents gain the confidence to experiment and enjoy music making with their children.

Sessions feature live guest musicians from a variety of cultural and musical traditions introducing a wealth of sound and visual spectacle including Klezmer duo, Cuban flute and percussion, Brass Quintet, Chinese dance, African drums, jazz Saxophone, Santouri and a host of classical instruments.

The Sessions

  • Sessions introduce families to a variety of different songs, from nursery rhymes to musicals, including some from HMDT’s own songbooks.

  • Dance and songs with actions play an important role, from learning simple dance steps in different rhythmic styles to animal role play.

  • Musical concepts such as pitch, rhythm and tempo are introduced through percussion instruments, focusing on developing listening skills and concentration in a group environment.

  • Sessions prepare children for nursery and school by introducing teamwork and instilling structured discipline whilst still having fun, alongside activities designed to help them develop their speech, vocabulary, listening and simple numeracy skills.

He spent the first half of term with his head in my lap and then one day began to join in everything and now there’s no holding him back! It’s been brilliant for his confidence!
