I CAN SING! – Music Theatre

from years 3 to 13 and beyond
skills, confidence and friendship in performance and theatre

Poster with the words "I CAN SING!" and "MUSIC THEATRE" in purple text, decorated with dots and corner borders.

I Can Sing! offers the opportunity to experience the excitement of Music Theatre training and performance in a variety of stage disciplines with leading professional artists, gaining new skills, confidence, firm friendships and performance opportunities.

Uniquely, due to the fact I Can Sing! is part of our larger Saturday Music Programme, students can also opt to take additional instrumental or singing lessons (subject to availability).

There is no audition process as we welcome students of all abilities and focus on reinforcing the ensemble performing traditions, drawing on repertoire that includes classic Broadway numbers alongside our own original commissions.

There are currently 3 groups aside from the Minis: Junior 1 (Yrs 3-4), Junior 2 (Years 5-7) and Seniors (Years 8+)* who each receive classes in the following:

*Year groupings may change according to student numbers.

  • introduces the joy of performing and expressing emotions through song, focusing on developing singing skills in a healthy way and developing technical skills including breath control, vocal quality and singing in harmony. Students work with a variety of musical genres and genres with a focus on musical theatre from the 1920s to the modern day and operas composed for young people, with plenty of scope for solo work.

  • enables students to learn a variety of dramatic techniques, including improvisation, characterisation, storytelling, dialogue and mime. They also explore group and individual talents to help them build confidence and develop their communication skills.

  • teaches students dance steps and routines which draw on the wide range of dance styles that make up theatre dance performance, whilst encouraging them to be active and healthy. They also learn how movement can be used to express emotion and action as part of musical performance.

  • helps to build students’ awareness of the methods of putting together the different elements of music theatre together in a rehearsal situation. In these sessions which are unique to ICS!, they work with the whole team of Conductor, Accompanists, Choreographer and Stage Director to put together all the elements they have learnt for performance building skills such as teamwork, patience, stamina and conveying stories and expression whilst at the same time having a huge amount of fun!

  • at the end of each term give everyone the opportunity to showcase musical theatre repertoire, take to the stage in HMDT Music commissions, or work with writers and composers to create new work, with a large-scale production mounted each year involving all the ICS! students working together from Minis to Seniors.

The show was astonishing – full of surprises, really coherent with great choreography and very witty. The children were remarkably well rehearsed and rightly, very proud of themselves. Congratulations!

Simply because of the feeling you get from performing and showing off your skill and ability in this field. It’s really helped my self-confidence.

Thank you so much for all your hard work, kindness and support over the past year (and more). The girls truly love music and their friendships through the programme and it has made a real difference to their well-being. Also thanks to all the wonderful teachers, they are now blossoming under the individual teachers.
